Japanese Lion Dance

What is the Japanese Lion Dance?

Edo Kotobuki Jishi is a traditional Japanese lion dance from old Tokyo dating back to the Edo period (1603–1867). Kotobuki means “celebration” or “felicitations,” and shishi (sometimes pronounced jishi) is often translated as “lion.” In Japanese tradition, however, the shishi is a mythical creature believed to bring good fortune, protection, and blessings. For centuries, Shishimai performances have been featured at New Year celebrations, weddings, festivals, and other joyous occasions.

Our Mission

The San Diego Shishimai Kai is a nonprofit organization dedicated to studying, preserving, and performing the traditional art of Edo Kotobuki Jishi. As one of the few groups in North America performing this beautiful art form, we are committed to keeping its history, music, and traditions alive for future generations. Under the guidance of Kyosuke Suzuki of Wakayama Shachu, we study and perform the music and dance in its traditional form while sharing its cultural significance with audiences throughout our community. Through performances, we introduce audiences to traditional Japanese music, culture, and history, helping foster cultural understanding and appreciation.

Help Keep Shishi Dancing

Our passion is to build community through Shishimai while preserving this centuries-old tradition for future generations. Every performance requires ongoing care of our costumes, and musical instruments. Your donation helps support:

• Instrument and costume maintenance and repairs
• Community performances and cultural events
• Educational outreach workshops
• Training and development for future performers

Your generosity helps ensure that this unique art form remains vibrant, accessible, and thriving in our community. By supporting San Diego Shishimai Kai, you’re helping preserve a living cultural tradition—and helping Shishi continue to bring good luck, joy, and celebration to our community.
