Shishi Mai!

The San Diego Shishimai Kai of the Folk Club of San Diego Taiko performs Edo Kotobuki Jishi, which is a 400 year old traditional lion dance from the Edo Period of old Tokyo. Shishi is a mythical beast and her bite and dance purifies a space, expelling bad spirits. She often brings her good luck to New Year celebrations, building openings, and any special celebration, like weddings and birthdays.  The dance of the shishi is accompanied by several traditional Japanese instruments, including the taiko (Japanese drum), atarigane (hand gong) and shinobue (bamboo flute).
